    Stretchin’ it out!

    Thursday, March 26th, 2009

My long lost days of cross country running back in high school, taught me to always “stretch it out” before and after a run. Since then, I’ve not continued running but have always tried to keep stretching before and after mountain biking and snowboarding. Recently we’ve had a chance to review a great video sent to us from Peggy Hall called Yoga for Board Sports

    twisting-chair1.jpg

We found this video easy to watch and follow. It is accessible for someone like me who has never done yoga - but always thought “ya, maybe I’ll give it a shot sometime”. This video has inspired me to start following this before and after ride routine (or parts of it at least).

What I like is that this is yoga designed to be exclusive for board sports and the stretches are tailored to mimic those you would actually be doing while in action. The segments are demonstrated to help you see how the move(position) would come to life while participating in any board sport.

It was helpful to see male and female demonstrations, so you are getting to see varied adaptations of the description.  There are also visuals of surfing and snowboarding(which I especially liked) in between the demonstrations, which helped further the connection.

Peggy’s voice is calm, fluid, consistent, clear and informative with background music that is relaxing and not at all a distraction. She explains that yoga is not about executing the perfect pose, rather-becoming more aware and taking from the stretches what you need to improve your riding. Another important point being that you may think you’re not flexible enough to do it, but don’t be concerned-it’s about becoming more focused on your sport.

Yoga for Board Sports is a consistent way to keep yourself in shape when there is down time between trips to the hill, trails or water. I can also see the benefit of using this yoga to stay in shape and get back into a routine after an injury.

Yoga for Board Sports is a regular routine that keeps your muscles fluid for jumps, tricks and boarding; overall it’s awesome!

    Stay Limber!

    As it is Monday, I’d like to introduce to you our newest member of the FreshPow! Community;

    Jessica Miller, Skier - 28, OH/USA jessicamiller.jpg

    1. What is your summer sport? Rowing
    2. Favorite thing to watch on screen (TV or Movie):
    Psych (tv), Out Cold (movie)
    3. 5 songs on your playlist:
Don’t Stop Believin’ by Journey; Wasting Time and If I Had Eyes by Jack Johnson, Anytime by Eve 6, Home for a Rest by Great Big Sea
    4. When did you start skiing? What inspired you to start?
I started skiing in 1995 on a trip with my youth group. My mom went with me (she’s been skiing most of her life) and I went down the hill, hell bent for leather and never looked back. My technique has improved since then, and I now have a healthy sense of fear, but there’s no feeling in the world like making first tracks while the sun is still making it’s way up the mountain.
    5. Most frequented riding spot?
A group of friends and I try to ski a new location every season, but for local skiing we head up to CaberFae Peaks in Cadillac, Michigan. They throw a monster St. Patty’s Day shindig. And the hill’s not much to sneeze at, but the third floor bar just off the terrain park at Alpine Peaks in Michigan is fun too.
    6. Favorite move/trick:
    Not falling
    7. Your skiing style:
    Not falling
    8. What did you have for breakfast?
Trip breakfast is usually bacon, eggs and toast.
    9.
If you could ski or ride anywhere in the world, where would it be? I’d love to go to Chile or Reykjavik.
    10. Are you sponsored?
    Not likely
    11. What does your Monday to Friday, 9 - 5 look like? I work in marketing. If it’s a blue bird day, I might be out sick.
    12. Describe your ideal day of riding:
Hit the hill early before people have had a chance to push all the good stuff to the bottom of the hill, check out all the trails and pick my faves. Catch up with the crew for a warm-up and lunch and back at it until they kick us out. Love night skiing after dinner provided anyone can stay motivated!
    13. Do you have a favoured Pro or Amateur?
Picabo Street. She’s a tremendous athelete and a great, gracious competitor. And my mom used to call me Picabo when I was younger.
    14. What is your all-time favourite dessert?
    Cheesecake.
    15. In your opinion, what is the worst trend/fad for your
sport? Skiing with an MP3 player. I love to hear the sound my skiis make as the slide over the snow.
    16. How do you prepare for a day of riding?
    Stretching and a bloody mary.
    17. What is your “must-have” for hill-side eats?
    chili and crackers.
    18. What item in your gear bag can you NOT live without?
    Chapstick
    19. What do you do “après-board”?
cards and drinks with friends, or a night on the town
    20. What was your most embarrassing / memorable
moment on the hill? My friend and I we racing down the hill and I was trying to catch up to her. She hit a jump she wasn’t expecting and yardsaled. I hit the jump right on her heels and had to lay horizontal in the air to avoid hitting her when she fell. I landed hard on my hip and limped to the lodge for a time-out.

Thanks Jessica for divulging your preparation secrets; LOVE the Bloody Mary idea…

    Hello All,

As many of you know from last year, this month for me is more aptly referred to as Movember. For those of you not familiar - this is the thirty day span in which I sacrifice my upper lip and general respectability for a great cause. Yes, once again I am growing a moustache in support of Prostate Cancer Research.

Last years campaign was a great success so I’m putting my lip on the line again in an attempt to better the 2007 total of $2,550. Please visit my 2008 Movember web site at the link below to see all the details and consider offering your support in the fight against prostate cancer - the number one cancer threat to Canadian men.

    http://igniter.ca/Movember08.html

    This is your best resource for ongoing updates, current donation total, a list of the generous contributors and a direct link to my Movember donation account. Alternatively you can contribute with a cheque by way of the following;

    1. Write a cheque payable to the ‘Prostate Cancer Research Foundation of Canada’, referencing my Registration Number 1479891 and mailing it to:

Prostate Cancer Research Foundation of Canada
    Attn: Movember

Calling all Boarders - Come together to help one of our own!

    Tuesday, November 4th, 2008

Sometimes, I wonder about man-kind and how cruel we can be to each other, but then a wonderful occurrence happens and a great majority of people come together and help the victims of this harsh cruelty; overpowering the insanity and violence, coming together to help one another in a time of need.

Such is the case with a MT, USA board Instructor; Paul Overby.

Paul was subjected to a brutal beating (nearly costing him his life) in an attempt to stop would-be thieves from stealing a friend’s Moped. In turn they beat him unconscious and left him for dead.

They are being held on attempted murder charges and are awaiting trial, but in the meantime, Paul and his family and friends are banding together to help Paul with his recovery. Unfortunately, this means over $2 million dollars worth of medical expenses and the loss of employment while the care is being given.

Paul’s story is below and so is information about ways to help out, including a really fun festival fundraiser being planned in his honor!
I urge you to pass this information along and help out if  you can; this is the time to show cruelty just how kindness woks!

    —–

Late at night, Tuesday September 16th, 2008

Paul had just finished walking his friend home safely from a bar, and noticed several men attempting to steal his friend’s moped.
He had lived in Bozeman for over 3 years at that point, and had never seen these young men before, but decided to stop them anyways.

Paul attempted to tell them ‘to back off’ and ‘just leave’ when one young man jumped him from behind, and hit him in the back of his
head with his elbow. He instantly fell down and the same young man allegedly started kicking him repeatedly in the face and head.

The attack lasted less than a few minutes because when nearby witnesses came running, both attackers were already gone. One of the witnesses found that Paulie was choking on his blood and turned him on his side to help him breathe.

After being called the police found Paul unresponsive with no pulse, and lying in a parking lot“bleeding heavily from the head,” according
to a written statement released Wednesday afternoon. The police said he had stopped breathing and emergency CPR was administered.

Shortly after, he was taken to Bozeman Deaconess Hospital where the medical staff desperately tried to get his airways cleared and allow
    him to breathe.

Paul was beaten so severely that no visible face, mouth, or nose was left behind. His airways were also blocked from choking on his own vomit, his lungs were filled with so much fluid that the emergency team was unable to clear his airways.

He was later flown by helicopter to a Billings hospital where he was placed critical condition in an intensive care unit.

Most of his injuries were to the face. Every bone in his face had been broken and 2 major surgeries were needed to repair them.

Paul’s family in Minnesota at was notified at 4:30 AM Wednesday September 17, 2008.

They were told that he was having difficulty breathing and that he was being airlifted to Billings, Montana. At that point, they just did not know if he would make it to Billings.

Some of Paul’s friends immediately drove from Bozeman to Billings. Paul’s family will always be very grateful that these friends watched over Paul until they could get to Billings from Minnesota.

When family arrived, what they saw was a face that looked like a smashed pumpkin painted black, blue, yellow, and green. He had an oxygen mask on and blood was being pumped from this stomach (he lost at least half of his blood).

On Thursday, September 18, Paul had his first facial reconstructive surgery. The surgery took 6 hours and when complete, Paul had 8 plates in the lower half of his face and his jaw was wired shut. Each eye socket required three plates and two were needed for the jaws. One eye socket was so pulverized that cartlidge was taken from his nose to rebuild it. Paul also had a trachea tube because he couldn’t breathe from his nose or his mouth.

On Wednesday, September 24, 2008 Paul had his second surgery. The forehead was stabilized with a mesh material and the nose bridge was rebuilt. His trachea tube was downsized.

Paul’s friends have sent up a trust fund to assist with medical expenses. Anybody wishing to make a donation can send it to the following address:
